About

Hi, I’m Steve. I’m a freelance animator, designer and media producer based in Brighton, and this is my blog all about learning.

Partly down to my love for trying new things – mostly down to my indecisiveness – I’m constantly trying out new technology and production techniques, and learning something new with every move. This is where I write about them.

I am also, like anyone else, learning more about life, careers and everything else as I go. This blog is all about those things too.

About me

Throughout my undergraduate degree I’d never been able to settle on a particular specialisation. Animation, interactive, illustration, I tried it all and then some. After I graduated with a Masters in Graphic Design from Sheffield Hallam University in 2011, I took up a job as a Careers Media Information Officer at The University of Sheffield, where I worked in animation, video production, print design, branding, web design, interactive and social media to name a few. On top of that, I was running workshops with students, teaching colleagues and working closely with learning technologists, and with every job I was finding out something new.

In January 2017 I left my job and moved to Brighton to start a Masters, however after that didn’t quite live up to my expectations, I left the course and decided I would focus on teaching myself the things that interested me. This has so far included animation, procedural design, 3D, interactive design and more.

I also work as a freelance animator and designer, and you can find out more about that at histeve.co.uk.

About Inbetweening

Inbetweening – often shortened to tweening – is an animation process of filling in the frames between two poses to create an illusion of change over time. I felt this was a good metaphor for my own process of learning as I develop my experience and knowledge of my industry and the work I do.

In this blog, I reflect on the things I learn and share them with you, in the hopes that you can learn something too if you want to. Sometimes there’s tutorials, sometimes there’s critical analysis, sometimes there’s just me blabbing on.

I’ve covered a range of topics, which you’ll find listed in the categories.

I hope you find it useful. Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions, or just fancy a chat.
